What is dental insurance PPO
First lets talk about the two different types of dental insurance plans available. Just like any other insurance, dental insurance is categorized as either Indemnity or managed care plans. Dental PPO plans fall under the managed care plans.
Dental PPO stands for preferred provider organization. These are probably the most common types of managed care dental insurance plans around. Most, if not all, dental PPO plans will require that you pay a deductible. Typically, if you have a dental insurance PPO plan you will be cared for through a network of dentists who have agreed to service the plans members at a discounted rate. When you go to a provider that is in the network, you will usually have to pay a percentage of the discounted rate and the insurance company will pay the remaining balance.
For example, you might have to pay 30% and the insurance company will pay the remaining 70%.
With a dental PPO plan, you are allowed to use doctors outside of the network. However, the amount you are reimbursed will be based upon the amount that a dentist in the network would have accepted as full payment. If other words, its ok to see any dentist outside the network, but you might end up spending more money out of your own pocket. Any other charges will be considered your responsibility.
Before you decide to get involved in a dental insurance PPO plan, do a bit of research to make sure it is the right choice for your financial situation. After all, you do have other options such as the dental Indemnity plan and the dental HMO plan.
Read about each one and make sure you understand the different rules and regulations. This way you will be able to pick the perfect plan for you and your family.
